can't get ethernet connection

I'm using Virtual PC and have installed windows 98, 2nd edition on it.
It will not connect to internet. It can't detect my ethernet cable.

Is there a way to fix this?

What settings have you selected in the networking options for the VM?

is it not detecting the connection or not getting an IP address? How
does your host PC get it's TCP/IP information?

I've got a check mark by detect settings automatically. I tried set up
with the internet conn. set up wizard and that didn't work.
(This is VPC 2004 btw)

I see there's a box for setting it up manually but I don't know what
info I'm supposed to put in that box if I check it. Is that my IP
address?

How are you connected to the internet? direct to your ISP,router, etc?
If your computer is connected directly to your cable/dls modem, thats
the likely cause...most ISP only give you 1 IP address, and that will
be used by the host.

shutdown Win98,change the network options to Shared Networking and
then start Win98 back up and see if that give you internet access.

I use a router. We have three computers - non virtual - hooked into a
router. The Virtual PC is on one of those computers. But I'm pretty
sure, all three show the same IP address.
Do these instructions still apply with that info? None of our
computers are hooked up into a network. They are all separate - but
they are all using same router, a 4 port router. I'm really clueless
about this sort of thing.

Ok, but still try my suggesting about using Shared Networking and see
what happens.

Is there a specifc reason that you're not using the latest version...?

They will all appear to have the same external IP address since they're all
going through the same router - internally, they will be different.

1) Is your router set up as a DHCP server? I.e. when each of the physical
machines boot up, do they get an IP address assigned to them by the router,
or have you hard-coded this manually?

2) On the three physical computers, pop a command window and run ipconfig on
each - what does this show?

The reason I ask this is, with three physical computers and one or more
virtual computers, by far the simplest method of getting them all talking to
each other and getting them all on the Internet would be set up a small home
network. I appreciate that you consider yourself "really clueless" about
this sort of thing, but it's not particularly difficult to set up, and
totally obvious once you've done it once...

I bought it a few years ago when that was the current version.

I never had to set up anything manually. They just all worked from day
one as far as I can remember. I recently reformatted one of the
computers adding new partitions, etc., and had no problem with it
detecting the ethernet control.
(that's the computer with VPC) So I guess they have the IP address
assigned to them by the router.

I just went to start, run and did that, a black dos window popped up
but went away before I could read anything.

We didn't want to be on a network.

If more than one machine is connected to the same four-port router
switch, they are networked, whether you know about/want them to be or not.

The vm should work the same way as the physical machines do by default.
As suggested in another post, check what network config the vm has and
compare it to the config of a physical machine. Type ipconfig /all at the
command prompt.
