But it only works on XP. If you have Vista and run XP as a VHD it isn't possible or what?

Both of these tools will give you a new VHD file containing the same
data as in the original VHD file (they copy the data over). But when
you look at the disk drive in XP after booting up on the new disk you
will find that the C: drive is just as full as before...
What you now have is a disk with a lot of unused space outside the C:
partition, so you now need to use some extra tool to expand the C:
partition to use the extra space on the drive.
This is not a simple task (for the computer novice). Depending on the
guest operating system there may or may not exist tools to accomplish
this in the operating system itself, otherwise you need to get a tool
from somewhere. Partition Magic comes to my mind, but there are
others.

I've used Partition Magic for years - never had a single issue with it...

Exactly what I mean.
You need to *also* get PM (or similar) to complete the expansion task.

I recommend Acronis Disk Director nowadays.

The inexpensive BootIt NG from terabyteunlimited.com can also do this (as well
as shrink partitions if there is enough room). Excellent product.
