64-bit Confusion

I'm currently using Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Server 2005 and want to run a
64-bit O/S in a virtual environment. Isn't a 64-bit hardware architecture
required to run a 64-bit O/S, real or virtual? Could someone help me out her
or direct me to a source for questions?

Re: 64-bit Confusion

Virtual PC and Virtual PC only support 32-bit guests, no matter the
host's architecture and OS.

Neither VPC2007 nor VS2005 supports 64-bit guests, regardless of the CPU(s)
on the host machine...

For that, you'll need a different virtualisation technology such as Hyper-V
or VMWare...

Not possible to do with VPC2007 or VS2005. None of these can run 64
bit guests.
You need to look at Microsoft Hyper-V or VMWare products instead.

The only Microsoft product that allows a 64bit environment is Hyper-V.
VPC and VS will run on a 64bit host, but only allow 32bit VMs.

You could try VirtualBox, the new version supports x64 VMs. VMWare
does also.

But, for any of these, you need to have 64bit hardware underneath.

Yes, but I said you need 64bit hardware, not a 64bit OS on the host.
You still need a CPU that is 64bit capable.

Yes you did, and I didn't mean to imply that you hadn't - apologies for the
confusion...

Thank you all for helping me get a better handle on my requirements, both HW
and SW. Always impressed by this site and help offered.

no problem, I wasn't clear in my original response either!!

So, to recap:

You can run a 64bit guest OS (VM) on a 32bit host OS, provided that
your underlying hardware is 64bit capable (x64, not ia64).
