VPC doesn't detect my CD/DVD writer

It detects my CD reader drive. But I also have a CD/Dvd writer drive
which I need to work to copy over stuff.

It should detect it as d or e drive. I tried running the hardware
wizard. Not sure what else to do?

The drive is a
"SATA super-WriteMaster™ DVD writer LightScribe

Serial ATA interface support DVD+R 8X, DVD-R 8X Writing DVD+R dual
layer 8X, DVD-R dual layer 8X, DVD-RAM 12X Disc labeling: LightScribe"

link to its specs are here if needed:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...SBN&fullspec=F

I'm using VPC 2004 . Operating system on the virtual machine is
Windows 98 2nd edition.
(The computer the virtual machine is on is windows xp sp3 - not sure
that info is important).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It won't. VPC emulates all the hardware in a VM. All VMs in VPC have
a CD/DVD-ROM drive.

Let me clarify...it won't detect your DVD writer as a writer, but it
should detect it as a DVD/CD reader.
Are you saying it wont' work as a reader either?

Are you trying to read CDs or DVDs?

If you right-click on the cd icon in the lower let corner of the Vm's
window, what options do you get? Make sure to put a readable CD in
the drive first.

VPC2004 and VPC2007 both emulate one single optical drive.
The *emulated* drive is a *reader* and never a writer no matter what
actual host hardware the emulated drive is connected to.
Furthermore VPC2004 only emulates a CD drive, DVD drive emulation
appeared with VPC2007.

So:
- you can only have a single optical CD drive in the guest
- the drive will be a CD drive unless you upgrade to VPC2007
- the drive is read only, you cannot write to a CD or DVD from the
guest.
- it does not matter what kind of hardware device your host has, it is
passed to the guest as an emulated drive identified in Vista running
under VPC2007SP1 as "MS C/DVD-ROM ATA Device"
What it appears as in VPC2004 I don't remember anymore, but something
similar, I believe.

Any particular reason you're not using the latest version...?

thank you for the clarification.
It is not detecting it at all. It does detect the other CD drive tho.
I have 2 CD drives, one a reader only, the other a reader/writer. It
detects only the one reader drive. Should it also detect the other as
a second reader?

Hi: Thanks for response.
So even if I upgraded to the 2007, and even if I got it to recognize
my DVD drive, it would never allow me to write?

How do you copy stuff from a Virtual machine then? Can i copy stuff to
a floppy disk?

Hi again Mark:
I bought the 2004 back when you had to buy it. I only recently learned
its free now. (I don't suppose I'd get much now for my old 2004
version on ebay eh?)

I don't have Vista so how do I get it? Download from Microsoft? Would
i then have to create an entire new virtual machine? Or could I just
upgrade the 2004 that's installed? I have some programs set up and
working on the 2004 virtual machine now and it would take several
hours ( probably a full day) to have to set them up again with a new
virtual machine.

The reason I have to ask rather than try, is I don't have my floppy
drive working on that computer. Its hard to get a disk in as it
doesn't line up correctly and I just haven't gotten around to
dismantling and reassembling/replacing it.
