Firstly, at the risk of pedantry, there are no DOS windows in 32-bit or
64-bit Windows...

Secondly, as previously stated, you *REALLY* do need to consider your
virtual machines as absolutely identical to physical machines in every
aspect... What you have here is *two* machines (one physical, one virtual)
trying to share 3GB RAM...

When you start up a virtual machine, it will (try to) grab the amount of RAM
assigned to it from the host. So, by assigning 2.5GB RAM to a virtual
machine running on a host with only 3GB RAM, you are effectively throttling
your host down to 512MB RAM. So now you have a Vista host trying desperately
to run in 512MB RAM - and you're wondering why things don't work!

Regrettably, there's no fix for this apart from the obvious i.e. give your
host more RAM...

It will, so long as it's the only VM running... However, the Vista host will
very soon start to to page which will cobble performance to an almost
unuseable degree...

There is what looks like a DOS Wndow that flashes. I suppose it's really a
command prompt window?
Anyway, why would the program not run in a machine that has 2.5 GB of RAM
even if the host doesn't have enough RAM? The problem is occuring in the
virtual machine, not the host. The host is not crashing and has no
observable quirks. I have 2 machines, the virtual one should have enough RAM
and yet will not allow a set-up program to run.
I was under the impression that the machines are independent, why is the
virtual not allowing a program to install? Am I wrong about the independent
issue?
Thanks, Don

That's exactly what it is...

Rather than running the installation from Windows explorer, pop a command
window and run it from there. Make note of any errors...

I'm sorry. What is compatability mode? Don

As expected.

Without actually knowing what app you're trying to install (which you
*still* haven't mentioned!), I would say that despite the fact that you have
assigned 2.5GB to the VM (completely throttling your host in the process)
there still isn't enough free RAM for the installation. You say it requires
2G RAM - I'm betting that it requires 2GB *FREE* RAM, and there isn't enough
*FREE* RAM on the VM...

I've been following this but I don't recall you mentioning what application
this is.

I'm getting the feeling you're installing a DOS based application, as this
is a common error when installing these under many versions of Windows and
your complaint noted above is a common one.

If it IS a DOS application, it may well be that the command session you've
got running doesn't have enough free RAM. The nominal 640K of free base RAM
gets used up by various things. When I run "mem" on my Vista command window
I get this:

D:\Local>mem
655360 bytes total conventional memory
655360 bytes available to MS-DOS
582000 largest executable program size

1048576 bytes total contiguous extended memory
0 bytes available contiguous extended memory
941056 bytes available XMS memory
MS-DOS resident in High Memory Area

If a program I'm trying to run requires over 582,000 bytes of free memory,
I'll get the sort of warning you're seeing. I've had programs fail to
install or run, however, because of that "0 bytes available contiguous
extended memory.

At least on my system (Windows Vista Ultimate) the normal command session is
\Windows\System32\CMD.EXE, and I can't adjust it's memory properties.

However, you can also run Windows\System32\COMMAND.COM, where you CAN adjust
those memory properties.

You can also right-click the install program executable and, again, set the
execution properties, including memory, for the setup program. You'll
probably end up having to set them for the program being installed too.

This all is assuming that you're trying to install a DOS program.

If it's a Windows program, then I'm not at all sure what your issue is.
I've got more than a few Windows 95/98/ME programs (and even one a Windows
3.1 program) running under Ultimate with few or no problems. The only thing
that I haven't managed to get a couple of them to stop doing is seeking my
floppy drive when they start up.

Yes indeed! I've asked the OP for this information, but he has chosen not to
supply it...

Based on the OP's comment: "I looked at the software documentation and it
requires 2GB of RAM", I disagree since DOS apps (nor DOS itself) can address
anything like that amount of RAM, even with epanded / extended memory...

Does compatability mode work well?
BTW, the application is a Windows based program called Visix.
It basically allows you to capture images from a scanner, view, and
manipulate them.
I see minimum RAM is listed at 256MB, ideal is listed at 2 GB.
