Installing Win98SE

I am attempting to install Win98SE as a guest OS, but VPC 2007 does not
recognize the CD although when I insert the CD in the CD tray, my host OS
(WinXP Pro) does autostart.

So I am attempting to use a workaround, but want to be sure of the steps so
I do not overwrite my host OS.

I created a Win98SE bootdisk and VPC can read it. Here's the steps I want to
take:
1. Insert the Win98SE CD.
2. Boot via the floppy disk so I will get an A:\ prompt.
3. At the A:\ prompt type (without quotes) "format C:". I'm presuming this
will format the virtual disk partition not my C partition on my host OS - is
this correct?
4. Once the virtual disk partition is formated, type(from the A prompt again
without the quotes) "Z:\setup".

I believe this will install Win98SE.

Anyone see a problem with these steps?

Thanks,

Paul

Yes - you've missed one out...

Between 2. and 3. above, run FDISK to create a partition on the virtual hard
disk.

Also, your boot disk will need to have a CD driver in its CONFIG.SYS and a
reference to MSCDEX in its AUTOEXEC.BAT...

Sometimes installing from the CD is hard. I have found that using an
ISO image of the CD results in more certain, more trouble-free
installations.

I guess I should have mentioned I have already created the VHD.

Already checked to ensure it does - and it does. This is a boot disk I used
to use when I had to install Win98SE on a computer that had a floppy disk
drive but no OS.

Thanks,

Paul

Creating a VHD does not partition it...

OK. I think these are the (corrected) steps I need to take:

1. Set up Win98SE VHD
2. Insert Win98SE CD in CD drive
3. Insert Win98SE boot disk in floppy disk drive
4. Restart Win98SE VHD; immediately press DEL key to change boot sequence to
(1) Floppy drive and (2) CD ROM so the VHD ill see both the floppy and the CD.
5. When boot disk starts, select "With CD ROM Support"
6. At the A:\ prompt, type (without quotes) "FDISK"
7. At the A:\ prompt, type (without quotes) "format C:"
8. At the A:\ prompt, type (without quotes) "z:\setup.exe"

Hopefully this is correct.

So could I create an ISO image from the CD I already have?
I have Nero Express and one of the 'data disc' options is to create a
bootable disc. Would this create an ISO image?

Thanks,

You could but, personally, I wouldn't bother - it's not a requirement...

Some people prefer to always create an ISO image just to install an OS - I
never do, and have never had a single problem...
