Cannot map network drives

Hello all:

I have an image running in Virtual PC on my desktop and I can get to
internet sites from the guest, but I cannot map a network drive to my local
server. My LAN is set up with IPs 192.168.1.x, my router is 192.168.1.1, my
image IP is 192.168.1.155, and the server is 192.168.1.94. On the guest IE
works fine and can browse the internet, but I cannot see any of the shared
drives on my LAN nor can I ping any of the machines. I can ping the router
and get a reply, but when I try to ping 192.168.1.94 I get nothing.

Can anyone make a suggestion as to what I can do to troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

John.

Can you please clarify what you mean by "an image" - are you referring to a
virtual machine on which you have installed on operating system...?

1) What OS is running on the host?

2) What OS is running on the guest?

3) Have you configured the guest's virtual NIC to point at the host's
physical NIC?

4) Are both host and guest in the same workgroup / domain?

5) Have you enabled file sharing and/or public folder sharing on the host
(depending on which OS is running on the host)?

6) Check the firewall settings on both host and guest, if enabled.

Hi Mark:

Thanks for the reply, answers inline prefaced by JJS>>

From the Guest it seems like I cannot get past the router to any of my LAN
machines., I can go out to the Internet, but cannot ping, network, etc. any
of the machines on the LAN from the Guest...

Re: Cannot map network drives

Have you installed "virtual machine addons"? If not you will not be able to
map the drives through UNC path. Although you should be able to map them
through IP.
ex: \\192.168.1.x\sharename

With the addons installed you can use the UNC path.
ex: \\servername\sharename

That's not correct. You do not need the VM additions to use standard
Windows networking. The VM additions allow you to use VPC's sharing,
but that's not via UNC paths.

All you need to do is make sure both the VM's OS and the Host OS are
configured to allow file sharing.
