MS Virtual Machine

Hi All-I am running windows xp media center and tried to install ms virtual
machine. I can download the program and install, create a virtual machine but
can't install an os. I have a HP pavillion running xp media center sp2. The
install dvd's I made when I first bought the system. When I tried to use the
dvd I keep getting error message "recovery disk not compatable". The xp os I
have is legit with key # but I can't get to load in the os. Any ideas.
Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Re: MS Virtual Machine

It's probably BIOS locked to the host machine and you wont be able to
install it in a VM, you'll have to get a retail version of XP.

Re: MS Virtual Machine

Are you trying to install the same OS from the same disks you have on
your physical machine to the VM? If so, then that shouldn't work at all
because of the large differences between your physical hardware and the
emulated hardware. It surly is a violation of license also as your OS
is probably an OEM version and has no real "install" disks - only
'recovery' disks.

No. The first two letters in the abbreviation "OEM" stand for "original
equipment". Other than the CPU, all of the components in a virtual machine
are emulated, hence *completely* different from the host's physical
components...

Yes.

Probably not.
The DVD:s you created are intended for recovery install on the
physical system which it came with only. THe license gives no right to
install on any other hardware whatsoever. To enforce this the
installer checks the system it is being installed on for particular
"fingerprints" that uniquely identifies the system, like the BIOS and
some hardware specifics.
If they do not match the installer quits.

A virtual machine running in VPC 2007 exposes to any software running
in it the *emulated* hardware, which is quite different from the
*real* hardware of the actual PC. So even though you have installed
the VPC2007 system on the HP PC on which the DVD:s were created it
won't work anyway since thta hardware is not visible inside a virtual
machine.

If you have a *retail* version of the install CD for XP Home it would
most certainly be possible to create a virtual machine in VPC2007 even
if it is running on Media Center edition and to install XP Home inside
the virtual machine using that CD.
It is just the BIOS locked OEM recovery DVD:s that are not usable.
