Virtual PC 2007 and Win 7 public beta. Drag and drop won't.........

Virtual PC 2007 running on Winxp SP3.

Windows 7 , yesterday's public beta installed and running virtually.

Additions installed correctly ( mouse pointer moves across both desktops )

When I attempt to drag a file from the host desktop to the Win 7 desktop
an empty folder , not the file, arrives with a long numerical name and an
error
Quote

" An error in Virtual PC has occurred (d1)."

Any help appreciated.

Other than that , Win 7 beta runs fantastically in VPC, ( sadly no Aero )

David.

RE: Virtual PC 2007 and Win 7 public beta. Drag and drop won't....

I'm experiencing this same problem under Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 as the
host OS.

Some sort of file gets copied, but it doesn't copy properly and it does give
me the error. I setup the install of the OS as Windows Vista as that was the
closest option. Windows 7 hasn't been added yet. If Windows 7 gets added
they should add the option to change this so I can upgrade the Vista setup.

I hope this gets resolved soon. In the meantime setting up a shared folder
does work to transfer files...

Thanks,

Using wndows networking to connect to a shared folder is the
recommended way of transfering files between host and guest (as well
as between any of the PC:s on the network, virtual or real).
The reason is that there are many limitations to the Shared Folders
and Drag-drop functions in VPC2007. It cannot handle deep folder/files
trees, it cannot handle large files etc etc.

Recommendation is to *not* use the VPC2007 shared folders feature if
your files are big and also not to share a folder which has a deep
tree below it.

Re: Virtual PC 2007 and Win 7 public beta. Drag and drop won't....

Thanks for the clarification. In my experience though, they weren't large
files, or files with deep trees... This simply is not a limitation of
Virtual PC 2007, but rather an issue with the way it interacts with Windows 7
at this point in time. Sharing via shared folders works, but this is not the
only issue with running Windows 7 under Virtual PC, just one of the more
useful limitations.

Re: Virtual PC 2007 and Win 7 public beta. Drag and drop won't....

Windows 7 is still in beta, so there are no VMAdditions aimed at Windows
7 specifically.

to tell you the truth even in beta since Microsoft had to know so many
people would set it up virtually, they should have been prepared and made vm
additions for Windows 7 available for these testers. This way we would get
the full experience for testing

And waste valuable developer time creating VM Addtions for a beta OS
that will have changed and invalidate the VM additions before they're
ready for release?

You don't get the full experience testing it in a VM anyway. You're
not testing it against specific hardware or drivers, just a static VM.

Re: Virtual PC 2007 and Win 7 public beta. Drag and drop won't....

Yeah, the networking does work well. The drag and drop is not a big deal and
isn't really needed. I can live without it to be honest. I do agree that
the Virtual PC team should have made the investment to add Windows 7 as a
guest for the Beta given that many users are going to install this in Virtual
PC.

Is it lack of updated additions causeing the annoying "black screen issue,"
where the VPC window for any Windows client on a Win 7 host will
periodically need to be minimized/raised to eliminate the client's black
screen?
