Can't enable shared folders after installing Virtual Machine Addit

What I did is:
1.I used Windows XP SP2 x64 (English) as a host system.
2.I installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 x64.
3.I installed Windows XP SP3 x86 (English) as a virtual client.
4.I installed Virtual Machine Additions on XP SP3 client system.
5.I turned off client system.
6.I clicked Virtual PC Console > Settings > Shared Folders
7.I found that 'Shared Folders' button was not enabled yet.
8.I did step 3-6 again, but still 'Shared Folders' button was not enabled.

What should I do to enable shared folders now?

1) Start the virtual machine

2) Once it's booted and Windows has launched, go to the VPC console

3) Select the running virtual machine and click Settings - ignore the
message...

4) In the left pane, select Shared Folders

5) In the right pane, click the Share Folder... button and follow the
prompts

The VM has to be running for shared folders to be configured.

Re: Can't enable shared folders after installing Virtual Machine A

I had the same problem. I did exactly what was mentioned here. VM was
running. RIght Clicked on shared folders -> selected Shared Folders settings,
but the right pane was unavailable for selection.

Networking settings were fine. I was able to ping my host system and vice
versa. I am really stuck over here.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

What do you mean by *right* click???
Surely this should be *left* click?
Or are you talking about right clicking a folder in Windows Explorer
and looking for the Sharing menu item, i.e. setting up a regular
network shared folder???

VPC shared folders are not working via networking at all, so I am
really confused about your wording here.
Either you talk about VPC VM Additions shared folders and then
networking does not come into te picture or you talk about regular
Windows network folder sharing and then all normal network and
firewall settings in Windows have to be adjusted properly.
What are you discussing?

Re: Can't enable shared folders after installing Virtual MachineAddit

The virtual machine has to be running when you look at the shared folder
settings (specifically it has to be booted to the point where services
from the Virtual Machine Additions have started - which is usually just
before the login prompt is displayed).
