PLEASE HELP - Can't Get Virtual PC to Install Operating System!!!

Hi all,

I am well beyond VERY frustrated at this point. For the past couple
of days, I've been trying to install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise in
my Virtual PC environment that I just created. I was able to install
Virtual PC, create a virtual pc and virtual HD without any problems,
however, when I try to install the operating system, nothing happens.
I basically get stuck at the bios prompt:

*****************************************************************************************************************************
Argon PXE Boot Agent v2.00 (BIOS Integrated)
(C) Copyright 2004 Argon Technology Corporation
All rights reserved. www.ArgonTechnology.com
(pause a few seconds, then...)
CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 03 FF 90 F2 DB GUID: yadda-yadda
DHCP.... no boot filename... (and then laterly, I've been getting "No
proxyDHCP...." or something like that)

This shows for a couple of minutes, then...

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected
Boot
device_

*****************************************************************************************************************************

I've done an extensive search and research online and have tried the
following:

- Selecting physical drive before doing a 'reset' (tried resetting
both with the menu and with right-Alt + Del combination keys)
- I converted my Windows Server 2003 Enterprise CD files to an iso
image using toast titanium on my MAC powerbook and then burned the
image to a CD to try using it on my IBM Windows laptop where I'm
creating the virtual PC
- I converted the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise CD files to an iso
image using disk utility on my MAC and tried again on the PC
- I used WinImage to create an iso image from the Win2k3 CD and tried
using the image in the virtual pc
- In each case, I was sure to select the correct medium (physical
drive or CD from iso)
- I've tried hitting 'Enter' after inserting the OS CD
- I've tried dragging iso file from desktop to CD icon on virtual pc
- I've uninstalled and re-installed Virtual PC 7 at least 10 times

Now on the IBM laptop itself, I have it partitioned into 2 drives -
one running windows XP and the other running windows server 2003
enterprise. I'm trying to create this virtual drive through the
windows xp environment.

I've pretty much done EVERYTHING I can think of doing, all to NO
avail.

Somebody, PLEASE help me! I'm desperate and frustrated!

Thanks a million in advance.

Newtechie

1) Remove the Win2k3s media from the host's optical drive.

2) Launch VPC and start the virtual machine

3) When you see the PXE boot agent message, insert the boot CD

4) On the VPC console menu, click CD, Use Physical Drive D: (or whatever
drive letter your host's optical drive uses)

5) On the VPC console menu, click Action, Ctrl-Alt-Del

Now the virtual machine will reboot, acquire the boot media, and begin the
installation process...

Re: PLEASE HELP - Can't Get Virtual PC to Install Operating System!!!

Tried as instructed above, but no luck...

I'm still getting the message "...no DHCP or ProxyDHCP specified" and
then it goes to the screen "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or
Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device"

*sigh*

Sounds like whatever you did to the image made it non-bootable.

Burn it back to CD and if it doesn't boot on a real PC then it won't
boot in VPC.

What happens if you hit the Escape key...?

That's the thing, Ronald, it ACTUALLY BOOTS on a real PC without any
problems whatsoever. It's the same CD I used to install Windows
Server 2003 on the second partition of my PC and even now when I
insert it into the CD-ROM (without launching Virtual PC), it comes up
with the splash screen to install on the XP partition.

Yes, it's bootable, Jack... like I explained to Ronald above, it boots
on a real PC

I hit 'Esc' after it stalls at the "Reboot and Select...." screen and
it goes back to rebooting all over (ARGON PXE e.t.c....)
I then tried hitting 'Esc' at the beginning of the boot and I get the
message "Network boot cancelled by keystroke"

Thanks for your patience and help. Dunno what else to do.
