One of the most important things to remember with virtualisation is that virtual machines are *EXACTLY THE SAME* as physical machines as far as the software (both OS and applications) running on them is concerned. The vast majority of the time, software has not the slightest notion that it's running on a virtual machine - it simply has no need whatsoever to know this. As an example, say you created a virtual machine, gave it plenty of RAM, installed Windows Server 2008 on it, and then installed SQL Server 2008 on it. Now you add the virtual machine to your domain and tell your users that there's a new SQL Server on the network, and tell them what the name of the server is. Do they care that it's running on a virtual machine as opposed to a physical machine in the server room? Can they even tell the difference...? -- Mark Rae ASP.NET MVP http://www.markrae.net |
