Virtualization learning

Hey guys

I am very interested in learning about blade servers and virtualization
environments but my current work environment does not have any, still using
old servers (. Does anybody knows if there are any free simulation
programs on the Internet which can get me going? like creating a setup and
be able to administer it like in real life...something like Cisco's packet
tracer but involving blade servers and virtualization, hypervisor config
etc?

Thanks for your help

Mark

Firstly, you're in the wrong newsgroup - this one, as its name suggests, is
for Microsoft Virtual PC:

Re: Virtualization learning

Hey Mark

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded Virtual Server and have updated it too
as well. Only problem is that I installed Deamon Tools on host server and
mounted the image of the Windows 2003 Server R2 with it and attached it as
the optical drive for the virtual server. During the text portion of setup I
am unable to press F8 to proceed with the installation. Also I am unable to
install VM addons.

Any ideas mate?

Any particular reason you did this...? Sounds like all that has done is to
add an extra layer of complexity to the installation process...

Just use the iso image - no need to mount it...

Re: Virtualization learning

Oh I see then I will use directly the image. Also another question...is
virtual PC essentially a real virtualization solution or its just for
testing?

I mean real solution like VMWARE ESX?

Virtual PC is a desktop virtualisation application. As such, one of its main
purposes is for software testing and evaluation - that's certainly what I
use it for. Others use it for running old versions of applications which no
longer work properly on Vista, such as 16-bit apps...

If you're looking for a server solution, then you might consider Microsoft
Virtual Server - it runs as a service and has a web-based management
console, and is (more or less) analogous to VMWare Server.

However, if you're looking for something similar-ish to VMWare ESX, then you
should look at Microsoft Hyper-V.

VPC is a real virtualization solution. It's for a completely
different market than ESX server.

There are plenty of things that VPC can do that ESX cannot, its just a
matter of choosing the right tool for the job.
