Getting DOS 6.2 & Win 3.1 to Recognize the CD Drive

How do I get DOS 6.2 & Win 3.1 to recognize the CD drive? Normally with
these OS's one would install drivers for the CD drive that load during the
boot process. However, even with a readable CD in the drive, and specifying
the VPC for this installation to use the physical drive, when I reboot the
VPC, the drive spins up, but when DOS tries to load the driver (MSCDEX.EXE
/D:MSCD001 /V /M:15), I get an error message that the drive cannot be
detected.

Thanks.

You also need to load the CDROM driver in the CONFIG.SYS. Something
like:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001 /V

Re: Getting DOS 6.2 & Win 3.1 to Recognize the CD Drive

I forgot to mention that I also have the following line in config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\SBCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220

and in autoexec.bat I have the following line:

C:\SB16\DRV\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /V /M:15

These entries were made by Sound Blaster's CD-ROM installation program.
Should I be using a different set of CD-ROM drivers?

Re: Getting DOS 6.2 & Win 3.1 to Recognize the CD Drive

Steve...

I just answered my own question. I found "generic" CD-ROM drivers on a Win
95 CD-ROM setup disk that appear to work just fine. So evidently the Sound
Blaster CD-ROM drivers I installed aren't compatible.

It's possible that the Soundblaster driver doesn't support your hardware. You can download a more generic one from the web, but don't ask me where...

This driver is only for CD-ROMs directly connected to SoundBlaster
cards. IIRC it uses a proprietary pin layout and transfer protocol,
which is incompatible to E-IDE.
