Windows 7 onto VPC sp1

The way I understand, I should be able to install my DVD of Windows 7 (beta)
onto a Virtual PC. I have 2 instances of Virtual machine 64 bit (sp1). When
I try to custom install from the CD, I can't see either VPC to install to,
only the C & D drives. I'm supposed to see an "other" option but no luck
there. Please help me install windows 7 into a Virtual machine.
HP pavilion laptop
Vista Premium 64 bit (I know, no support)
4 G ram

You should just create a new VM and install Windows 7 directly into
it. There won't be any C or D drive until you start the installation.

I'm not sure what you mean about the "other" option.
When you create a new VM, use Vista as the OS in the new VM wizard,
not Other.

Please clarify what you mean...

VPC = Virtual PC, which is an application, a piece of software. Its purpose
is to create and manage virtual machines. When you say you have "2 instances
of Virtual machine 64-bit (sp1)", what do you mean?

When installing a guest operating system, you need to go through the
following procesure:

1) Launch the Virtual PC application

2) Create a new virtual machine, specifying the settings most appropriate to
the operating system that you intend to install - in the case of Windows 7,
choose "Vista"

3) Start the newly created virtual machine

4) Capture the boot media from the CD menu in the Virtual PC console

5) Reboot the virtual machine - it will then boot from the boot media and
begin the installation process.

I have 2 virtual Machines created by VPC 2007 sp1.
I was told after creating the virtual machines all I needed to do was boot
from the DVD and it would offer to install to the virtual mach, but it
couldn't see the mach to install to it. I will try your steps now.
Thanks for the quick reply

I attended an FACUG/APCUG conference this weekend and they distributed a
copy of Windows 7 (beta) and in their presentation they installed to a
virtual machine directly from the DVD. When it reached the point of where to
install, the computer's dives were offered, but lower it said "other". That
is where we were to select the virtual machine

What they mean is to boot *the virtual machine*, not to boot your host
machine from the DVD.
When you start a newly created virtual machine from within the VPC2007
application, the virtual machine has no operating system yet installed
so it is looking for bootable media. Often at this time the DVD in the
host drive is not "captured" yet to the virtual machine and so it is
not seen.
At this point you should capture the optical drive of your host to the
running virtual machine, this can be done from the pop-up meny tat
appears if you right-click the CD icon in the bottom border of the
virtual machine window.
Next you need to reboot *the virtual machine*, this is easy to do from
the Action menu of the running virtual machine.

Now it should boot up te DVD and install of Win7 starts.

I'm afraid your memory is playing tricks on you, because that's not how
Virtual PC (or any other virtualisation software) works.

A virtual machine is exactly the same as a physical machine in terms of the
software (OS and apps) running on it. When installing an OS on a virtual
machine, you need to start up that virtual machine first. Just like
installing an OS on a physical machine. You can't begin the installation
process on the host and then somehow point at a virtual machine...

I wonder if you're getting confused with the page of the virtual machine
creation wizard where you tell it which OS you're about to install? That
does indeed have an option of "Other"...
