first time setup???

I am looking to run a virtual copy of Win98 on an XP SP3 machine.
Downloaded and installed VirtualPC 2007 and followed all the setup
instructions. I am now trying to load the Win98 setup disc and it keeps
telling me 'reboot and select proper boot drive...'??? I have the win98 disc
in E: and have selected that drive in the virtualpc to use E:.
What have I missed?

Before you can install, you need to partition and format the C: drive
that you're going to install Win98 on.
You can get everything you need for installing Win98 (sans Win98 CD
and license) from my website.

Thanks Steve,
I had just started browsing the forum and didn't find anything related at
first. Made the post and then later after getting about 1K headers... found
your discussion on using Win98SE which was paydirt. I've expended my sandbox
time for today so will play later. Thanks for the info. We have a few old
programs that only run under 98/98se and this will be most helpful if we can
get it running.

Is it recommended to run windows update while in the VM to get security
updates? I not even sure if MS is giving security updates for 98. I know
they suspended all other updates long ago.

Good question, I'm not sure of this either...I haven't tried to update
my Win98 VMs in quite a while. I keep them isolated from direct
contact with the Internet.

Re: first time setup???

Win98CD is not bootable like Win2000/XP/Vista.
We have to boot from startup FD to setup Win98/98SE.
You should capture startup FD first then reboot VPC so that
VPC can boot up from startup FD image.
You can partition and format HDD image then.

I recommend to excute smartdrv.exe before executing
Win98 install. If not, it takes very long time to install OS.

Thank you for that. Been a while since I last did the Win98 install and I
get brain cramps...
