SQL Server cannot be restarted after moving the VM to another PC

Is there any configuration in Virtual PC or in SQL Server needed? I started
the VM in a PC with VISTA as "real" OS and for development purpose, I
transferred the VM to another PC at home using XP as "real" OS. Then I cannot
start the SQL Server anymore and error message as "The request failed or the
service did not respond in a timely fashion". What should I do to make it
right??

Since the computer name was changed you need to change the instance
name:

Did he really change the SQLServer PC name? I got the impression that
he moved the *same* virtuual machine to a different VPC *host* PC, but
this action does NOT change the name of the guest PC.
The guest really does not know on what host it is running so this
could not be the problem.

I would suspect any of these instead:
1) CPU is different between the two hosts, for example AMD versus
Intel. This can affect things like Microsoft platform detection.

2) The MAC address of the guest has changed (if the user created a new
guest on the new host and pointed at the same VHD file). MAC addresses
are known to the SQLServer and if they change it might cause problems.

Re: SQL Server cannot be restarted after moving the VM to another

Dear Steve,

I can't even open the SQL Command line tool to execute the command stated in
your reference. Similar error message : "Sqlcmd: An error has occurred while
establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005,
this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL
Server does not allow remote connections.."

Can I change the instance name another way?

Thanks!

Sorry, I'm no SQL expert. You might want to post in one of the sql
groups.
