| | Virtual Guest reboots Host Operating System Any suggestions welcome to my problem I've been using Virtual Server 2005 (hold with me a minute here) on XP Pro x64 on two machines for some time now but felt I should really move my more powerful machine to Hyper-V and get Vista onto my laptop for management, and continue to use VS2005 (R2 SP1) on Vista (I know it's not supported, it's not supported on XP either - except non-production, which this is in fact, it's my test labs). The Vista host would guest a couple of client machines (XP/Vista) that would interact with the rest of the VM network hosted on the second machine So... Hyper-V on second box, fine, no problems (yet) Vista Business x64 on laptop (x64 for cpu and ram support) and install VS2005 R2 SP1 (plus SP1 update for extended client OS support) on, on trying to build a guest (xp x86 and also tried server 2003 x86) from scratch for initial check, the host machine reboots I never had any problems like this with XP Pro x64...so I'm thinking - oh well VS2005 R2 SP1 def not supported, move to Virtual PC 2007 Same results I've turned AMD-V on/off - same result Updated my BroadCom 57xx drivers - same result Uninstalled/installed VS2005 R2 SP1 inbetween both of the above - same result Uninstalled/installed VPC2007 inbetween both of the above - same result Issue doesn't present itself using VMware Server Any suggestions? I do have a TechNet Plus subscription, so mI may have found a reason at last to use one of my two free assistance calls! TIA |

| | Re: Virtual Guest reboots Host Operating System Rob Thanks for the reply BIOS is A08, laptop is a Dell D531 - bang up to date I'd been through the logs at a glance when I was having problems and nothing was flagging as warning or critical - other than a critical to say there was an unexpected shutdown...nothing more than that. However I'd just had a closer looks at noticed Volume Shadow Copy is on...might be a cause, so I'll have a tinker with turning that off if I can and see how I go...any further suggestions will be appreciated "Robert Comer" wrote: Quote: > First thing I'd check for is a BIOS update for your laptop. > > Is there a bugcheck event in the Event viewer? > > -- > Bob Comer > > > > On Sat, 18 Apr 2009 04:14:05 -0700, Craig > <Craig@xxxxxx> wrote: > Quote: > >Any suggestions welcome to my problem > > > >I've been using Virtual Server 2005 (hold with me a minute here) on XP Pro > >x64 on two machines for some time now but felt I should really move my more > >powerful machine to Hyper-V and get Vista onto my laptop for management, and > >continue to use VS2005 (R2 SP1) on Vista (I know it's not supported, it's not > >supported on XP either - except non-production, which this is in fact, it's > >my test labs). I really don't know if it would help diagnose this or not, but can you set the network adapter for a VM to "Not connected" to see if that lets a VM run? -- Bob Comer On Sat, 18 Apr 2009 15:18:01 -0700, Craig <Craig@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: >Rob > >Thanks for the reply > >BIOS is A08, laptop is a Dell D531 - bang up to date > >I'd been through the logs at a glance when I was having problems and nothing >was flagging as warning or critical - other than a critical to say there was >an unexpected shutdown...nothing more than that. > >However I'd just had a closer looks at noticed Volume Shadow Copy is >on...might be a cause, so I'll have a tinker with turning that off if I can >and see how I go...any further suggestions will be appreciated > >"Robert Comer" wrote: > Quote: >> First thing I'd check for is a BIOS update for your laptop. >> >> Is there a bugcheck event in the Event viewer? >> >> -- >> Bob Comer >> >> >> >> On Sat, 18 Apr 2009 04:14:05 -0700, Craig >> <Craig@xxxxxx> wrote: >> Quote: >> >Any suggestions welcome to my problem >> > >> >I've been using Virtual Server 2005 (hold with me a minute here) on XP Pro >> >x64 on two machines for some time now but felt I should really move my more >> >powerful machine to Hyper-V and get Vista onto my laptop for management, and >> >continue to use VS2005 (R2 SP1) on Vista (I know it's not supported, it's not >> >supported on XP either - except non-production, which this is in fact, it's >> >my test labs). | | Re: Virtual Guest reboots Host Operating System I hadn't gotten around to speaking to Microsoft as of yet but have just put together a couple of new platforms for my VM guest (in addition to the existing setup and laptop) I rebuilt the laptop back to XP x64; did all the usual updates etc etc Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 + UPDATE My lone XP SP3 guest rebooted the host (laptop) when I fired it up I've turned OFF hardware assistance for the VM Guest itself...fires fine...anyone know if anything was changed in HW Assistance in the Update that was released...seems a bit odd I've NEVER had any problems with HWA before now Thanks Quote: > > eventually you turned on hardware virtualization in your vm but not in > your laptops BIOS > > regards > Steffen > |

| | Re: Virtual Guest reboots Host Operating System As I say earlier in the thread the BIOS is up to date and I've been using VS Server 2005 on the laptop for the past year (host OS XP x64) without issue I need to get some time to methodically evaluate all possible variables and I'll come back with a definitive answer (and maybe fix?!) Thanks "Steve Jain [MVP]" wrote: Quote: > On Wed, 29 Apr 2009 02:44:04 -0700, Craig > <Craig@xxxxxx> wrote: > Quote: > >I hadn't gotten around to speaking to Microsoft as of yet but have just put > >together a couple of new platforms for my VM guest (in addition to the > >existing setup and laptop) > > > >I rebuilt the laptop back to XP x64; did all the usual updates etc etc > > > >Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 + UPDATE > > > >My lone XP SP3 guest rebooted the host (laptop) when I fired it up > > > >I've turned OFF hardware assistance for the VM Guest itself...fires > >fine...anyone know if anything was changed in HW Assistance in the Update > >that was released...seems a bit odd I've NEVER had any problems with HWA > >before now > It's usually a bug in the BIOS, try updating your BIOS. > > -- > Cheers, > Steve Jain, Virtual Machine MVP > http://vpc.essjae.com/ > |
