| | Installing modems in Virtual PC Hello, Anyone master the art of installing modems inside the guest in VPC? A year ago I had a couple of modems installed and what is most important working in guest VPC: one guest was WindowsXP and another guest was Win Vista. Now, I have a different computer and the different PCI modems. None of them can be installed in VPC guests, but they work fine in the host. Is there any trick forcing the guest's Windows to recognize the original driver or at least using the generic driver? Right now the original driver is not recognized during modem's installation. Using generic Windows driver such as "Standard 56000 bps modem" the installation is successful and the modem passes diagnostic querry. However when it come time to use it the message "Resources unavailable" pops up. Please advise, Fred |

Hence any PCI drivers won't start because they cannot find the hardware. 2) Modems are a bit special because quite often they will be attached to a COM port on the host system (internally, not via a wire). It is possible in VPC2007 to activate serial ports (2 max) inside the guests and when you do you get to choose which from the ones available on the host to be transferred into the guest. This is all done in the settings for the guest in the VPC2007 management console. Once you do this chances are that you can use the modem as a standard RS232 device inside the guest. -- Bo Berglund (Sweden) |

| | Re: Installing modems in Virtual PC Fred, I am not sure if this can work at all. Your best bet would be to use an USB modem as USB devices can always be mapped to a guest OS inside a VM. | | Re: Installing modems in Virtual PC Or the USB modem also maps itselfs as a virtual serial port. But Windows guest do not have USB drivers as no USB 'hardware' is provided by VirtualPC during installation, it's likely not possible anyway. | | Re: Installing modems in Virtual PC Matthias, VPC does not support USB devices at all. I know you are an expert in modems, Matthias. Maybe you have some suggestions how to force Windows to use that (or any other) modem. I do not insist of using the original modem's driver. It can be the generic, Windows driver. However, when I use "Standard 56000 bps modem the installation is successful but when making a call the "Resources unavailable" message pops up. Interestingly modem's query does proceed correctly, which tells me, there is a need for some little 'push' to help Windows correctly set it up. I know TAPI and I am familiar with the TapiBrowser. Please guide me what tests should I run or what changes in modem's ini file can help to solve that problem. Please see below the modem's log.
