a newbie with a question

i am running windows vista ultimate but a few of my games wont run under
vista and i am new to this whole virtual pc thing would this program work for
me to put a copy of xp back on my system so i can play all my games that i
love instead of just the ones that will run on vista and how exactly do i do
it? second question i was going to set up my external hard drive to be its
host drive i guess you would call it is that also a possibility?

Yes. Remember that virtual machines are considered the same as physical
machines in terms of licensing, so you will need a separate licence for
Windows XP...

Yes, so long as they don't need advanced graphics (e.g. DirectX / 3D) or an
advanced sound card

3) Restart the virtual machine - it will acquire the optical media and begin

Not quite sure what you mean... If you want to create your virtual
machine(s) on an external drive, that should be no problem so long as it is
USB 2...
