Restore doesn't work

I try out a lot of software and use Virtual PC to protect my computer
from viruses. I got the Virtual PC setup just how I like and used the
restore feature to create a restore point. After a recent batch of
Microsoft updates, I couldn't access my network or the Internet. I
monkeyed with the settings to no avail. I decide to use the restore
point I created. None of the restore points -automatic or manual would
work. So I have to start over.
I am looking for suggestions on how to prevent this from happening in
the future. Is there a ghost program or backup file I can create that
could recover my basic setup?
p.s. I've never been able to use windows restore feature when I really
needed it. I'm beginning to think the feature is a joke!
All comments welcomed. THANKS!

Use snapshots, far superior to system restore.

or just manually make copied of your .VHD.

Snapshots are a feature of VMWare products, not VPC2007...

It is simpler to just enable undo disks in the settings of the virtual
machine. Do this on your stable base system before you start testing.
Then when you shut down the machine after your tests you get the
option of committing undo changes to the virtual disk: DON'T ever do
this!!! It will defeat the purpose of the undo disk.
Instead either save the undo changes or discard them. If you discard
then your virtual machine will be back to the mint condition when you
start it the next time.

Discarding the undo changes can also be done manually on a shut down
virtual machine, just delete the VUD file belonging to the virtual
machine.
