There is no particular advantage to partitioning your hard drive before creating a virtual machine. You can locate the virtual hard drive on your second partition, but it will not help with performance. If it is Vista, then yes you cannot do it, but if it is XP or Win2000, then you can set aside 500 Mb for the virtual machine and leave 500 Mb for the host (which of course cannot be Vista either).
