Virtual PC Beta on Windows7 Installation Issue

I am trying to install the Virtual pC Beta (Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu) on a
Dell Optiplex GX620 (Windows 7 build 7100 and activated) . Pentium D series
930 (3 GHz) Intel Virtualization is turned on in the bios (with power off
reboot) . The install fails with the message: "The update is not applicable
to your computer"...any ideas on how to get the installation to proceed? It
appears that the CPU supports the VT according to Ed Bott at ZDnet.

Re: Virtual PC Beta on Windows7 Installation Issue

Is the Win7 host 32 bit or 64 bit? If it's 64, you have the wrong
installer, you need the 64-bit version.

Re: Virtual PC Beta on Windows7 Installation Issue

The Intel Processor Identification Utility shows my CPU to be a D930 with
Intel VT (which I have enabled in the bios) However the utility also shows
the CPU does NOT support "Execute Disable Bit"....which I think is required
for HyperV...perhaps it is an unstated requirement also for Virtual PC Beta ??

Hmm, I thought I had installed Hyper-V on my D930 system at one point.
I'll try and do an install of Win7 on it this weekend.

Strange. According to
http://processorfinder.intel.com/Lis...112&SearchKey=
there are 3 "Intel Pentium® D Processor"s with processor # = 930, and all of
these support both "Intel Vitualization Technology" and "Execute Disable
Bit".

(Sorry, I don't know if WVPC7 requires "Execute Disable Bit", as Hyper-V
does.)

Re: Virtual PC Beta on Windows7 Installation Issue

all processors that have either AMD-V or Intel-VTx (and or are 64 bit compatible) have the nx or xd/EVP bit standard...
and that means that your Pentium D supports it (checked Intel's website here
Intel® Pentium® D processor numbers)..
is there an option for this in the bios as this might be disabled...
this will also allow 7 to use DEP and you will be better protected against attacks...

This doesn't seem to be always true. Here are some processsors with
"Virtualization Technology" but without "Execute Disable Bit":

http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8VR
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8VQ
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8VT
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL8VN
http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL9JP

(I haven't checked all processor families, these links come from "Core Duo"
only.)

But what I find to be the worst, is that for the same processor number there
are models with different capabilities:

Intel Core Duo Processor T2700 WITH "Execute disable":

http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL9K4

and same processor # WITHOUT it:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL9JP
