| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Have 64-bit Vista Premium but need 32-bit My husband purchased a new laptop to take a distance education course. We did not realize that the software required to take this course is NOT supported by a 64-bit version of Vista (we have Home Premium). It will only work with 32-bit. Is our only option to download istall a Virutal PC? I do not know how to do this? Instructions indicate that you need to install a CD with an unused operating system? Does this mean that we need to purchase this? I am very nervous about doing this and wonder if I should just return the laptop and purchase one with a 32-bit operating system. Help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Last edited by lreeder; 06-01-2009 at 10:23 PM.. |

To run the 32-bit version of Vista in a virtual machine you would need to purchase the 32-bit version of Vista. After you install VPC you can create a virtual machine, but you still need a copy of the OS (such as XP or Vista) to install on the vm. |

| Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Re: Have 64-bit Vista Premium but need 32-bit It installs but will not run. When we click on the program, it will not run, there is a message that pops up and states that it will only run on 32 bit. |

Apart from a very small number of exceptions, Microsoft considers virtual machines the same as physical machines in terms of licensing. Quote: > Does this mean that we need to purchase this? Bear in mind that, apart from the CPU, all hardware inside a virtual machine is emulated - the host's physical hardware is irrelevant. If the course software requires high-resolution graphics, or USB devices like a dongle, it will probably not work properly inside a virtual machine... -- Mark Rae ASP.NET MVP http://www.markrae.net |

| | Re: Have 66-bit Vista Premium but need 32-bit Are you sure the software will not run on 64 bit Vista? Sometimes the language used, in this case "not supported", doesn't mean it will not run, just that if you have problems, "don't ask up for help" is what "not supported" means. It might run just fine on a 64 bit Windows. If it can't run on 64 bit, then it probably is really old software, and one would have to wonder why it hasn't been upgraded for a modern computer. | Vista Home Premium 64 bit | Re: Have 66-bit Vista Premium but need 32-bit Yes we are sure that it will not run. We looked on the help forum for the course and it seems that we are not the only ones experiencing this problem. It is frustrating that we have a brand new computer and we cannot use it for it's intended purpose. I would never have thought that a new computer would be an issue...usually it is an issue that your computer is too old!! |

| | Re: Have 66-bit Vista Premium but need 32-bit It isn't the computers fault it won't run. Not everything will work on a 64 bit OS, just the way it is. Easiest solution is to return it and get a laptop that comes with Vista x86 (32 bit). -- Crosspost, do not multipost http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 "lreeder" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:907bc72883825969d51d8bc4c232de30@xxxxxx-gateway.com...
