Ok, I'll try this again. I did change the CONFIG.SYS to read
LASTDRIVE=Z, though, but I'll put it back in the AUTOECXEC.BAT and see
if it runs through at boot time.

I was using a brand-new OEM DOS 6.22.

Bo Berglund (posting below this) said that I had to run FSHARE on the
host as well. I didn't see that in your list of instructions.

I have also gone to your website and see the VPC 2004 download. Would
that be helpful?

Again, thanks for your help. If I have to go the networking route, I'm
going to be in deep doo-doo, since I'm terrible at networking and that
kind of stuff.

No I did not!!!!!
I specifically asked you if you had run Fshare on the *host* due to
the error message talking about a host.
Then I stated that you mustr run it on the *guest*....

I also showed a *working* set of config.sys and autoexec.bat files
that I am using to do exactly what you want. It works right off the
virtual floppy on a pristine new virtual machine with nothing on its
hard disk.

OK, sorry, my bad I misunderstood you there.

Yes thanks, I'm working on this. My DOS is rusty and I'm having to fit
this in between a few other things.
