Open Virtual PC Console. In the list of virtual machines, click the virtual machine on which you want to install the operating system, and then click Start. Because there is no operating system installed on the virtual machine, a message is displayed to Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device. Ensure that the virtual machine window is the active window on your desktop, and then do one of the following: Insert the startup CD for the operating system into the CD drive, and then press ENTER. - or - Drag an ISO file containing a startup CD image to the CD icon in the status bar of the virtual machine window, and then press ENTER. In the virtual machine window, follow the instructions provided for the operating system to complete the installation. Notes To open Virtual PC Console, on the host operating system, click Start, point to All Programs or Programs, and then click Microsoft Virtual PC. It is possible to install an operating system on a virtual machine through the network. The virtual machine network adapter includes support for PXE boot. This means that when the appropriate network infrastructure is in place, you can perform a network installation of a guest operating system without needing a PXE boot floppy disk. Start the virtual machine, and then select Network as the boot device during startup. If you insert the CD into the CD drive before you start the virtual machine, you will need to capture the CD drive from the CD menu of the virtual machine window. Each virtual machine requires at least one virtual hard disk. You can create the virtual hard disk by using either the New Virtual Machine Wizard or the Virtual Disk Wizard. The Virtual Disk Wizard allows you to create a new virtual disk without going through the process of creating a new virtual machine. That virtual hard disk can then be assigned to any virtual machine. You must ensure that you are appropriately licensed to use all operating systems that you install on a virtual machine. Microsoft reviews licensing options periodically, including the use of operating systems on virtual machines. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=78095.
