Can't write to CD

When I try to copy a file to my D drive (CD), it keeps presenting me with a
message "Please insert a disk into drive D:" The thing is, I know it works
in a way, because I previously had copied a file FROM disk D. I'm now using
an empty CD, because when I tried to copy a file onto the original source
CD, it told me I couldn't because there were read-only files on it.

I've tried various combinations of having the CD in the drive when I bring
up the PC. Can't get past this.

Any ideas?

TIA
LAS

The optical drive emulated in Virtual PC is read-only, not read-write.
