Not enough memory?

I am using Windows XP.

I tried running a copy of Windows 98. I got the error message below.

"The virtual vachine could not be started because there was not enough
memory available on the host."

There is no way that this is correct. I have enough memory to running
the latest demanding computer games. Also, I tried to reboot and then
just run Virtual PC without running any other software. I still got
the message above.

What can be the problem?

Difficult to say unless you tell the newsgroup:

1) how much physical RAM the host has

2) how much of it you have allocated to the guest

Do you have Nero installed? If so, that's the likely culprit. Update
to the newest version.

I thought about that but didn't mention it because I thought this had been
fixed for ages, so didn't consider that the OP might still be using such an
old version.

IIRC, it's specifically the InCD module, right...?

Yep, InCD...I couldn't remember that part though.

Yeah, but "newest version" is a bit cruel, don't you think? <g>

1.) I have 2.75 GB of RAM

2.) I am not sure. But if you mean how much did I give the Virtual PC,
then it was about 75%.

2.75 * 0.75 = 2.06 Gb
Probably *way too much* for Win98!
Try reducing its RAM to 100 Mb or even less and try again.
When Win98 was current 100 Mb RAM was a huge amount and I think that
the OS itself has a calculation limit that is less than 2 Gb.

When you create a new virtual machine, one of the questions that the
creation wizard asks you is how much RAM you want to allocate to it. You
specify this value as a number, not a percentage, either by typing it
directly or by using the slider control.

Windows 98 has a minimum memory requirement of 16MB, and Microsoft recommend
24MB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182751

Allocating any more than 32MB to a Windows 98 virtual machine is just a
waste of your host's resources...

If you really have allocated 75% of your host's RAM to this virtual machine,
then you'll have reduced the host's memory to around 650MB!

That might be true if all you do is run Windows 98, but don't install
any apps. If you use any applications in said Windows 98 install then
you should set the limit more appropriately, but staying under 512MB to
avoid the VCache bug (and/or workaround the problem per KB253912)

You can run Windows 98 with 32MB of memory, but it's a fairly painful
experience.
