    Convert dual-boot to virtual PC?

    Hi,

My mom just got a Vista PC and I told her she could run her old PC inside
Vista with Virtual PC. Her old PC has a dual -boot of Windows and
windows2000 on a single physical IDE hard drive.

I imagine I would need to convert the windows98 and Win2000 into separate
    VM's

How can I do this and where to start?

I have experience win the host software - I have a couple VM machines but
they were native builds, not P2V. I've only done P2V with VMware/

    Thank you,
    -Bob

    Hi,

It's been awhile since I've tried it, but this "in place upgrade" procedure:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292175

has sometimes (no guarantees) worked for me.

You could just try creating an image first and dumping it into a VM.
The dual boot shouldn't be an issue.
MS doesn't have a P2V for VPC. But, using something Acronic TrueImage
or Ghost should let you image the box and then dump it into a VM.
Although I'd guess that for TrueImage you'd need to do them separate
    for it to work correctly.

if that was true on any level.

First, even though VPC 2007 wasn't "officially supported" by MS it
worked just fine and was used by many people.
Second, the VPC 2007 SP1 hotfix added support for Vista home.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958162

    Improvement 1
The Virtual PC 2007 support matrix is extended to include the
    following SKUs:
Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Windows Vista Home with Service Pack1 (SP1)

Steve, thanks for the correction. More reading on my part of recent material
would have told me exactly thus. I am red faced.

No worries. The MS site is sometimes confusing and requires you to
work much harder than you should for information. ;-)
