virtualpc printing

installed Microsoft Virtual pc 6.0.156.0 on vista home premium and installed
Win98se. All ok.

Can run some ancient programs but can not print. VPC does not support USB
and of course my printer in on a USB port!

Any suggestions as how I might solve this, short of another printer on lpt1.
Does not have to be real simple as the need for printing is minimal. Print
to a file and then print file from vista?

Will have to have some way of configuring a printer in the vpc. How?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Gary

Use network sharing. Share the printer on Vista, then connect via
standard Windows sharing with Win98. Of course, you'd need Win98
drivers for the printer to install in the Win98 VM.

alternately, get a free print to pdf program, use that, print to the
Win98 desktop, and drag and drop it to Vista and just print from
Vista.

Just have the host share the printer on the network. The guest will see the
printer the same way a physical machine on the network would.

Re: virtualpc printing

Checked and printer is set to sharing.

Probably have to load the print driver to the vm.

Will reply with results soon.

Thanks

Re: virtualpc printing

Installed print driver for Epson stylus cx6000 in Virtual win98se and can
print to file but can't figure out how to print the file. Switched back to
Vista home premium and find the file in c:/virtual disk but can't print it.

Any thoughts?

Have tried network sharing of the printer but can not access the printer or
vista from the virtual win98. Apparently win98 or virtual win98 cannot
access vista or the printer over the network.

Will try to locate a pdf driver on the net. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Gary

Have you set a user password on the host? It's a while since I
configured a VM but there was one aspect that required a user password
on the host and I think that it was printing.

Just found your post.

1. Can you ping the host from the guest? For networked printing to
work, your Win98 guest and Vista host must be in the same workgroup
(or domain). So, check those settings.

2. If you already have printed to a file on the guest, and copied that
file to the host, you do not "print" this file again - it already
contains the necessary control codes for your printer. Instead, you
just copy, or type, that file to the printer (that's how it used to
work in DOS times, ages ago. Haven't used this for decades...) This
would be done from a commandline on your host.
