| | Switch to 64 bit - will it work? Hi all I have currently Windows XP 32bit with Virtual PC 2007SP1 installed. I have lots of virtual machines. Now, I want to install Widwos 7 64 bit and the 64 bit version of virtual PC. Can I use my virtual machines without troubles? Thanks! -- eliasen, representing himself and not the company he works for. You should be able to create new vms using the existing .vhd files under the new OS and VPC version. |

FYI, the 64-bit "version" of VPC 2007 isn't actually a 64-bit app: http://vpc.visualwin.com/ngfaq.aspx#18 -- Mark Rae ASP.NET MVP http://www.markrae.net |

To run them in both, just leave the VPC additions installed from VPC2007 and to add them to the Win7 VPC, just double click on the .vmc file and it'll add it to the virtual machines folder and start it up. Do not install the integration components, just leave the VPC additions installed. It'd actually be better to convert them to the new VPC rather than running it in both if it's XPSP3 or above, but I can understand the need for compatibility between the versions, I need the same myself and it works fine. You just have to use shared network drives instead of shared folders. To convert them, uninstall the VPC additions while in VPC2007, then boot to win 7 and double click on the .vmc to add and start the VM, and when it's fully booted, install the integration components. (if > XPSP3 or above) Robert: Good information, but on this machine I will be running VPC 2007 on Windows 7, because the machine does not have hardware virtualization. -- David Wilkinson Visual C++ MVP |
