| | VPC2007\XPVHDBootinRestart I have XP SP 3 installed in my VPC2007. When I started up my xp vhd it did a disk check and fixed some errors with a few indexes. When it boots now, the Windows XP boot screen comes up for 15 or 20 seconds, then the xp vhd restarts. It continues to do this, it never gets to the login screen. What would cause this and is there a log I can look at to determine the cause? Thanks |

But that went nowhere fast. to *forget entirely* that this is a virtual machine and not a physical machine. Imagine you had a physical machine exhibiting exactly the same problem which, AFAICT, is a corrupt hard disk - what would you do...? Well, firstly you'd decide how important this machine is to you... And if it was important enough, you'd format the disk and restore the most recent system backup, and then take it from there. And if the disk was so badly damaged that it couldn't be reformatted, you'd install a new one and restore the most recent system backup onto that. Or, if you don't have a backup because the machine isn't sufficiently mission-critical to warrant a regular backup, you would do as has been already suggested i.e. attempt the system restore option from your Windows CD. And if that failed, then you might try running a hard disk diagnosis and recovery utility - whatever the current equivalent of Norton / Gibson is... And if even that failed, you'd take it on the chin, make a mental note to take regular backups of mission-critical machines, trash it, get another one and start again... This isn't a Virtual PC question per se... -- Mark Rae ASP.NET MVP http://www.markrae.net |

| Vista Ultimate 64-bit | Re: VPC2007\XPVHDBootinRestart You can still boot to a CdRom cant you? I know you can in VMware player, that way the virtual machine can still be diagnosed and fixed. |

Unless you changed the BIOS settings in the virtual machine, the cd should boot by first mounting it and then using Reset on the console Action menu. |
