Windows 7 Ultimate

Why is in Windows 7 you have to download a 460MB file (presumably this
is the VHD file) and an installer to add windows virtual folder to Start
menu. Judging on file size of the (460MB) it would be pre-configured OS
of Windows XP

Didn't Microsoft just take a stripped down version of Virtual PC and
called it "XP mode" ?

So, now you have two options if i am correct..

If your running Windows 7 Ultimate/Professional you download those two
files.. But if your running other versions of windows, you can just
download Virtual PC standalone, and install OS... Is this correct ?

By the way, what stops you from doing this on other versions of Windows
7? eg Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows Vista

XP Mode is the VHD with XP preinstalled, it's 460MB. Windows Virtual
PC is the new version of Virtual PC for Windows 7, its about 9MB.
