Unexpected "Access to specifies device, path or file denied"

I an running Virtual PC 2007 on Win XP pro SP3. It's run fine for months.
Today for no reason, I can't access my main files. I can still see both my
directories shared from the "real" machines, and in one I can still read and
write files, but in the other directory whatever I do I get "Access to
specifies device, path or file denied". I can't see why one directory should
be hit and not the other. If the files directly on the real machine, they are
OK, so it's not like the real machine is corrupt or anything. Any ideas
    beyond re-installing the VM?

    Regards
    Andy
