Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

Per Microsoft below is the supported Guest OS's for 2008 Hyper-V RTM. Does
anyone know if Windows 2003 SBS Standard will be added to this list? Has
anyone tried to make in a guest OS?

Thanks,

Matt

Re: Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

Nothing has been announced about it yet. I don't have any inside
knowledge, but I kind of doubt it anytime soon -- if ever.

Seeing as the target of a SBS is a single server setting, it doesn't
make much sense to virtualize it.

Re: Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

Actually it makes a lot of sense. Many LOB apps don't support SBS as they
don't support running on a DC. In a small business with 20 users and light
email, SBS on modern hardware is hardly working the hardware at all. For the
price of another server 2008 license you could install Server 2008 with the
Hyper-V role then SBS in one child partition and the Server 2008 virtualized
instance with the LOB app in another.

Re: Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

I've tried it. It works fine. As long as it's not officially supported I
don't think I'd deploy it in production.

Re: Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

I'd agree with Kerry. I've used it, there are no issues that I'm aware of.
It's not a supported scenario, especially not if you're running ISA as part
of your SBS. But since you said standard, there's really no reason it won't
work. (The underlying OS _is_ supported, so you can install Integration
Components. )

Re: Hyper-V Supported Guest OS's

I appreciate everyones input. I will be running it without ISA...

Stupid question. What does LOB stand for?

Thanks,

Matt

Line of Business application. Usually some specific application that your
business depends on. Often specific to a particular vertical market. Often
database driven.
