Hyper-V Questions

I have a few questions regarding Hyper-V that I am hoping people can answer.

1) Will there be any way to administer Hyper-V from an XP machine? All
management tools that I have found are only available for Vista and 2008
Server.

2) Does anyone know of any good books that have been released yet that cover
Hyper-V in depth? Especially ones that have good information for having it
installed on 2008 Server Core Edition.

Thanks much.

Re: Hyper-V Questions

1.) Not at this time. And no promises that I've heard that this will change.

2.) Our AdminCompanion book from MS Press on Server 2008
(http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Server...8046905&sr=8-1)
includes a full chapter on Server Core, and another chapter on Hyper-V. But
I haven't seen anything yet that is strictly a Hyper-V book. We includes
configuration scripts for Server Core in the book to simplify setup.

Is it possible to RDP to the host from an XP PC and then do the admin
from the RDP session on the host?

Yes. (if it's the full version, not core)

Re: Hyper-V Questions

Actually, you can RDP to the core version as well. It just opens up a normal
screen with a command prompt window inside.

Re: Hyper-V Questions

Yep, but there's no Hyper-V GUI in core... <g>

(I knew you could RDP, you just can't do what the OP wanted)

Re: Hyper-V Questions

Yes. The only problem with that scenario is that the connect application
will have issues with VMs that don't yet have Integration Components
installed. You won't be able to capture the mouse if you're RDP'd to run the
management. Once the ICs are installed, that's not an issue. But you'll get
some practice with installing and configuring OSs with no mouse doing this.

Re: Hyper-V Questions

Good point, I forgot about the mouse synch problem.

(I got used to installing the OS without a mouse during the Vista
beta. <g>)

Re: Hyper-V Questions

Try installing WHS without a mouse.

UGLY. I had to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to open taskmanager, and the run the ICs
setup program from the taskmanager run command. Couldn't just open a CMD
window because it wouldn't get focus.

Re: Hyper-V Questions

I did it in the beta, but I haven't even tried it in a VM since then,
the disk stuff was to unstable for me.
