Disappearing VMs

Hi,
I'm using Virtual Server 1.1.603.0 EE R2 SP1. Whenever I restart my system,
the VM's that I have configured, disappear and I have to add them manually
each and everytime I boot my Windows Server 2003 server up. I'm running a
64bit version with DotNet 3 installed.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
MuthuKumar

Re: Disappearing VMs

Disable A-V scanning of any of the VS folders and files. Though we've mostly
seen this on Hyper-v, at this point.

Re: Disappearing VMs

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the update. I've just tried reinstalling the .net and Virtual
Server 2005 but still unable to resolve it.

I was just analysing the reason for why it happened and noticed that I've
applied permissions on the folders where VMCs and VHDs are located.

i've removed access to all users except me and post which I was facing the
issue.

I again tried applying the default permissions on the folders and found that
they started working fine.

I'll keep you posted once I come to office tomorrow as the rights for which
"USER" affected the working of VMs.

I once again, would like to thank you and appreciate your valuable time.

Re: Disappearing VMs

Are all of your drives available when you reboot your system. In Hyper-V I
have seen this where the drives do not come online before the Hyper-V
Management service starts. I haven't seen this in Virtual Server before,
but if you are working with permission, make sure SYSTEM and the account you
potentially have set to start the host in the guest configuration have
access to the files.

I would also mimic the antivirus exclusions. We exclude .VHD .VMC .VSV and
..VHF from our Virtual Server Scanning both realtime and fullscan for these
servers.

Re: Disappearing VMs

Thanks guys for the updates...

And I guess I am back here after a long time!! Sorry for the delay..

Actually, I restricted permissions on few folders which resulted in this problem,

Later, I had to give full permissions to "SYSTEM" "My Account" and "Computer Name" accounts on that folder where I had VHD and VMC files..

That resolved it!
