MS Virtual Server 2005 OS same license as host computer?

I'd like to set-up Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 on my PC but as I
understand, you need to install an operating system on the resulting
virtual machine. My PC (the host computer) is running XP Professional.
Can I install that same exact copy of XP on the virtual machine, or
does it have to be a totally different copy, with a unique license?

That's incorrect. You need a separate license for a VM. You're
violating the license if you install the same copy of XP on the host
and the VM.

You're wrong, you do need a new license to install XP in a virtual machine.

Re: MS Virtual Server 2005 OS same license as host computer?

So, for the sake of clarification, I do need to separate operating
systems.

I guess that accounts for Microsoft's generosity in making Virtual
Server 2005 free.

Does the OS on the virtual macjine have to be XP Professional? Could
it be XP home edition or below?

No, just because its a virtual machine, doesn't mean you're not
benefitting from the OS. A VM is no different than a physical machine
in terms of licensing.

You can install most any OS. XP Home is not supported by MS, but it
will work. There is no correlation between what you're running on the
host and what you can run as a VM. They are independent of each
other.
