| | Server Virtualization Hey Folks - We need your help. We were hoping, we could gain from your experience with implementing server virtualization. When should we be using Red Hat Virtualization, Citrix Virtualization, Xen Virtualization, Microsoft Virtualization, Oracle Virtualization and VMWare. I will be very interested in learning from your first hand experience. I will also like to know, under what situations is one virtualization preferred over the other. - Thanks for your help |

Sounds like what you really need is a consulting engagement. -- Paul Adare MVP - Identity Lifecycle Manager http://www.identit.ca Congratulations! | | Re: Server Virtualization Very hard question to answer. In our case we looked at our available hardware that we could use to test the various virtualization solutions. In some case, Xen and the others that use Xen the hardware requirements to use the product prevented us from testing them. As a result they were dropped from our list of choices. We then looked at the learning curve, we're about 99.9% windows server with the 0.1% being appliances running some flavor of linux. VMWare ESX fell off the list as a result of this. Basically, that left us with VMWare Server and Microsoft Virtual Server to work with. We then looked at support and decided that with Microsoft if we had a problem we already had a Gold Support agreement in place, and we wouldn't have to worry about the finger pointing between VMWare and Microsoft if something didn't work or broke. This is a very simple look at our thought process, but in general what we found while testing was that all the products worked well, and in most cases we didn't see anything that said one product was better then another. We also see MS VS having an upgrade path that continues to support our goals, while we're not confident that VMWare will even be around in 5 years. Having said that we see EMC taking the reins away from Green as a good move for VMWare and they are starting to realize that they aren't the only player in town. I'm hoping that some of their 3rd party solution providers start porting their stuff over to support MS and the other virtual solutions. One thing we liked about VMware Server 1.6 that we wished MS VS had was USB support. We have some small license applications that would be perfect for virtualization except for the usb dongle they require. The AnywhereUSB solutions work in some cases, but require additional hardware to be purchased and maintained.
