ESX and Virtual Machine Manager

Hello,

my english ist not the best, so i´m sorry.

I plan to implement two of the gratis vmware ESX Server. I want to
manage them with the System Center Essentials combined with new System
Center Virtual Machine Manager.
Is it possible to move the virtual machines from one virtual host to
the other by using the VMM?
Is it possible to take a copy of the running virtual machine by using
the VMM?

Thank you very much.
Micha

Re: ESX and Virtual Machine Manager

Hello Micha,

The new version 2008 of SCVMM is planned for End of September.
With SCVMM 2008 could you move a VM from one host to another host. Also
VMotion will be supported.
Just for clarification you need for management of VMware VI3 a Virtual
Center environment.
The second question from you is not quite clear for me. If you want to do a
syspreped clone with VMM, this will be possible.

A other point from me :-) We have also a german SCVMM and Hyper-V newsgroup.

Re: ESX and Virtual Machine Manager

Hello Alex,

thank you very much fpr your information. At the next time, i will use
the german group ;-)

The reason for my second question: in the free VMWare ESX Server it is
not possible to backup the files of the running machine, and i hope
that i can realize it with the VMM. But you have written, that i need
a virtual center enviroment with vmotion to move the virtual server
from one host to another - so my wish to realize it with just the
three products (free vmware esx server + System-Center Essentials+VMM)
died. The virtual center enviroment costs too much.

Is it possible to achieve it with Hyper-V + SCE + VMM? Do i have a
microsoft based infrastructure which i can compare with the virtual
center enviroment (the microsoft solution is much cheaper, isn´t
it?) ?

I plan to have two hosts with a SAN and i want to run about 8 virtual
server, which i can backup while they are running.
