Vista - Question regarding the Supported Host Operating Systems

Hi,

I was reading through the Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 System
Requirements at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/vir...n/sysreqs.mspx and I
couldn't interperate one of the statement.

It is in the Suppported Host Operating Systems section and the statement is
"Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or later (for non-production use
only)."

Could anyone explain what is "for non-production use only" mean?

Hi,

It means that using XP Professional as a host OS will not be supported in a
real-life production (ie normal work) environment. You would get no support
from Microsoft for any issues arising. It does not mean that it will not
work, but if you have problems, you're on your own.

If you use a server operating system as the host (eg Windows Server 2003)
then you would be able to get support from Microsoft.

To expand a bit on what Jane correct says: A lot of us use VS as a solution
for testing out a new concept, or testing patches on our network before
deployment, or for building demos, etc. For this, it works great, and is
fine. But if I'm building a server to replace several physical servers, and
am running VS on the host? Then I need to be running Windows Server
underneath. Once I start having real users or real other computers logging
in and connecting to do productive work (as opposed to a test environment),
then I'm in production and it's time to require a Windows Server for the
host OS.
