| | Using a *.vhd file created by Symantec System Recovery HARDWARE: DELL PowerEdge 2850 OS: Windows 2003 Enterprise Application: Virtual Server 2005 We have purchased the Symantec System Recovery Option (12v). It has a great tool of taking the images it creates and making them VMWARE or Microsoft Virtual Server (*.VHD) files. I have been using this tool to Back Up our one of our DC's/Certificate Server's. I then took the file (*.vhd) and placed it on my test Virtual Server. At first I got this error message that it was the disk was too big for an IDE. The hard drive settings could not be saved. The virtual hard disk image “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Shared Virtual Machines\DC03\DC03_Z_Drive012.vhd” is too large for the IDE bus. Make sure that all virtual hard disk images connected to the IDE bus are not greater than 127.5 GB. I then created a SCSI Interface in Virtual Server I set it to the number 7. The new disk still would not boot. It just froze for hours. I deleted the SCSI Interface then I got the comment. Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot Device. I then had to recreate the Virtual Disk for the Server and recreate the SCSI 0 ID 0. It is now doing the same thing as before just sitting there frozen. Any Suggestions? |

| | Re: Using a *.vhd file created by Symantec System Recovery All VMs must boot from an IDE disk; SCSI can be used for additional disks, but not the boot volume. | | Re: Using a *.vhd file created by Symantec System Recovery Actually, you can boot from SCSI in Virtual Server. But you DO need to load the SCSI VMAdditions drivers onto a virtual floppy drive and use F6 to load them. However, given that this is not a MS VHD image, the could be other things going on. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel "Ryan Sokolowski [MVP]" <ryan@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7C029A32-65ED-4B7F-87A0-22AA7D9286E2@xxxxxx Quote: > All VMs must boot from an IDE disk; SCSI can be used for additional disks, > but not the boot volume. > > Hope this helps, > --Ryan > > -- > Ryan Sokolowski > MVP - Clustering > MCT, MCITP x3, MCTS x7, MCSE x2, CCNA, CCDA, BCFP > > > "Kit" <Kit@xxxxxx> wrote in message > news:34A05B12-BAF9-4830-A10B-275AE1326230@xxxxxx Quote: >> HARDWARE: DELL PowerEdge 2850 >> OS: Windows 2003 Enterprise >> Application: Virtual Server 2005 >> >> We have purchased the Symantec System Recovery Option (12v). | Vista Bussiness x64 | Re: Using a *.vhd file created by Symantec System Recovery If you are still working on this issue i may have a possible solution. when you use symantec backup exec system recovery or ghost to create the .v2i file the file thinks its the size of the entire partition it was created from. Therefore when you convet to put it into Virtual Server the partition size of the original drive which was >127GB won't work. Open Virtual server On the right hand column of menus under Virtual Disks select Inspect you will find an option to compact the VHD to the actual size that it takes up not how much the v2i was created from. |
