Vitual Server 2005 R2 Installation

I am trying to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows Vista SP1. The
installation process popped up a dialog box saying: Please install
IIS-Metabase (II6 Management compatibility) prior to installing this
software.

So I pressed the "Check for solutions online" and get a dialog box with two
links:
Microsoft Corporation
Which version of Windows am I using?

I tried the Microsoft Corporation link. It lead to a page that talked about
"Download Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1". Now if I can't install
Virtual Server 2005 R2 how am I going to apply a Service Pack?

So I went to the MSDN download page (for MSDN Premium subscribers) and tried
to find Virtual Server 2005 R2 with SP1 slip streamed. I could not even
find SP1 for Virtual Server 2005 R2 much less a slip streamed version.

I then did a search for IIS-Metabase and could not find anyway to install
that component.

Where do I find either Virtual Server 2005 R2 with SP1 slip streamed or an
installation package for IIS-Metabase for Windows Vista?

Hi Stewart,

Which Edition of Vista do you have?
If you have Business or Ultimate, then go to Control Panel, Programs and
Features, and select "Turn Windows features on or off". Expand the Internet
Information Services, Web Management Tools and select IIS 6 Management
Compatibility. IIS 6 Metabase is there. Apply, OK.

Home Editions do have limited IIS capabilities - off the top of my head I'm
not too sure what they contain.

When doing the VS2005 install (if I remember correctly from when I did
it) you can select a Custom install and then you can simply uncheck
all items that refer to IIS or any web interfaces.
Those are only there to make it possible to manage the VS2005
installation and guests via web pages from Internet Explorer (does
probably not work with FireFox anyway).

Now the installation will go through a lot better (did for me).

To manage the VS installation you will then need to also download and
install the application VMRC+ from Microsoft. With this you can create
and modify guests and control how they should run etc.

Why did I do this? Well, I don't have IIS, I have Apache 2 installed
on my XP Pro host machine....

I am running Ultimate. I installed IIS Metabase and IIS6 configuration
compatibility. Although it didn't ask for one I did a system restart.

I then tried to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 and got the same message:
"Please install IIS-Metabase (IIS6 Management compatibility) prior to
installing this software"

Do I have to install all of IIS6 Management Compatibility?

Probably, I don't remember the setup anymore since it was a long time
ago I did it, but I believe that is the one.
Try to uncheck it and see what happens. I think you will be able to
install.
Then you just need to use VMRC+ to manage the VS2005 system like I do
on several PC:s. All of them are XP Pro PC:s, which do not have the
server class IIS available anyway.

I went back and installed all of the IIS components I could find. I was
able to publish my web site to a local directory.

I then installed Virtual Server 2005 R2. At the end of the process it
opened a web page (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\summary.html)
with links to the Administration website. I clicked on it
(http://nysabv0007/VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1) and got:

HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized
You are not authorized to view this page due to invalid authentication
headers.

Detailed Error InformationModule IIS Web Core

Physical Path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual
Server\WebSite\VirtualServer\VSWebApp.exe
Logon Method Not yet determined
Logon User Not yet determined

Even though IIS is installed and allows multiple web sites the Virtual
Server installation created a web site in a directory under the Default Web
Site.

I am logged in as an Administrator on the physical machine. In fact I am
logged on as the only administrator on the physical machine.

How do I open the Virtual Server administrator web page?

Why don't you give up on this IIS thing???

You can search this newsgroup for admin website problems and you will
find at least one each week all asking "why can I not log in to the
admin website"...
There are so many problems that I cannot understand why any sane
person still uses it.
Probably it works OK if you have a server class host PC and this is
why MS does not fix it (workstation class PC:s are not supported for
Virtual Server...)

My advice *still* is:
- Install *without* the IIS components.
- Install VMRC+ as the admin console *application*
- Get started with the real work you want to do with VS2005

I agree with Bo. Running the admin website on Vista is a not pleasant.
It was designed to work on Windows Server with IIS6. It can be made to work
on Vista with IIS7 but it is a pain.

I downloaded and installed VMRC+. I then ran it and the only option in the
hosts dropdown box was localhost. I then clicked on the Connect button and
got:
---------------------------
VMRCplus
---------------------------
The default virtual machine configuration directory could not be retrieved.
User does not have sufficient access rights.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
I assume this was because it did not give me the option to upgrade permissions.

So I went to the folder that VMRC+ was installed in and right clicked and selected runas
Administrator. (The shortcut did not allow me to select that option.) Then I clicked on Connect
and was connected to the localhost.

I can now create virtual servers.

Thanks.
