Virtualise Windows 2008 Server Active Directory

I would like to know if it is a good idea to virtualise a AD Controller
running on a Windows 2008 Member server? In the spirt of Green computing and
just having to manage the one piece of hardware at a subsidary company
location.

Regards,

Deyton

Do you mean running the only DC in a site as a vm on a host which is a
member of that domain? If that is what you have in mind, I would not
recommend it.

The basic problem is that, when the member server boots, the DC is not
running. It will have trouble booting and logging on. A member server
expects to see a DC when it boots.

Re: Virtualise Windows 2008 Server Active Directory

It is a great idea not only from a technical solution, but also a
licencing solution (you might save some $$$ on your licencing).

DCs are database servers which need to be available quickly - you'll
need to plan as such. BUT in small branches with only a few dozen
users the servers will be doing very, very little.

I've virtualized DCs with VMware with excellent sucess and would
expect the same with Hyper-V.
