file server as guest OS

Hi,

I am trying to setup a file server as a guest OS on Hyper V. I would
also like to use the storage within the same machine (RAID 5
underneath). Can someone advice what is the normal approach to setup the
storage? Create a separate volume and make it as passthrough disk or
create a volume and shared it though the Host OS?

Thanks

Re: file server as guest OS

Keenly watching for answers to this thread, I'd also like to see the common
approach to tape backup of that guest FS.

Re: file server as guest OS

I am also interested in this scenario. I hope to virtualize my file server,
but don't really want to store all my files in a single VHD (mounted on the
guest).

I intend to use a pass-through disk to the guest to store my files. However,
I would also like to use this pass-through disk for another guest.

I have been told that only one guest should write to the disk at once (to
avoid corruption), but I was wondering if I could create 2 folders on the
disk (d:\Guest1 and d:\Guest2) and have them only read and write data to
their specific folders only.

My only other option is to have a dedicated pass-through disk for each guest.

You can still get corruption, even if it's separate folders, as that
really doesn't matter where that data is actually written on a disk.

Or just use VHD's. <g> I really don't see the drawback in your
situation. Even with pass-through disks, only a single VM can access
the disk. (the host can't even access it while the VM is running.)
