Restarting the host server > VMs??

(using Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 R2)

Hi,

Is it normal that the virtual servers don't get automatically shutdown
first when one tells the host server to restart? It seems like the
virtual server get simply killed of? At least that's how it seems when I
later on connect to the virtual server ...

Isn't it possible to tell the host system to first stop the virtual
servers and only THEN restart? I'm asking because the host server
sometimes restarts automatically because of Windows Update.

Or should one disable automatic Windows on a server with Virtual Server
2005? Which would be kind of annoying because it would be best if the
server could restart during the night automatically ...

Thanks for your help!

Jerome

You have to tell VS2005 *for each virtual machine* what it should do
when it suts down. It is in the configuration for the guest.
Then you have to also tell it what it should do when VS2005 starts up
(for example power on the guest). Also a per-guest setting. If power
on then you must also supply a user account for running the guest
complete with password.

I believe that there is no default behaviour coming close to what you
want.

also, if you have a lot of VMs, Windows will likely reboot before all
of them can shut down or go into a saved state.
you could try this:
