Licensing Scenario

Hi all,

i wish to implement a scenario with:
2 server with windows 2008 standard and Hyper-v
system center virtual machine manager
2 VM, both with windows server 2003, one with exchange 2003 and one
with sql server 2005

If I want to Use the virtual move of the 2 VM from one server to the
other, wich Licenses and how many licences must we have in total?

many Thanks

The Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition includes one license for the host
system plus one for a Windows Server 2008 guest OS.
So your 2 physical systems are are covered for the host OS and the guest
with one VM on each system,.
Now - if you move the guest off one system to another technically you are
now not correctly licensed as the EULA permits the use of the virtualized
guest license only on the licensed parent device.
Now if you want to remove the physical license from the server to move it to
the already licensed physical server then you are now correctly licensed
again.
If you intend to keep both the physical systems licensed for Windows Server
2008 Standard then you will need to buy another license for the VM that is
moved from one machine to the other.

Read the EULA by clicking on the link in winver.
