Hyper-V Server (free) download - or Windows 2008 HyperV Full version

I am trying to decide which version to install. I don't really want the
overhead of a win2k8 gui but I am worried because I do not really know the
differenc in versions. Can you install windows 2008 hyper-v without the gui
and still have all of the features?

thanks,
Clay

Yes, you can do a Core install. However, if you do, you'll need a second
physical machine on the network, either Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008,
where you can run the Hyper-V Manager to create your VMs. (there are command
line workarounds.)

Re: Hyper-V Server (free) download - or Windows 2008 HyperV Full version

Thanks much Charlie - did not realize that I double posted this. I had the
list sorted wrong and I thought my first post did work. Anyway - one more
question. Is there a considerable resource hit when installing Windows 2008
GUI with only hyper-V role vs Windows 2008 core with only hyper-v role? I
just got a dual quad core (essentially 8-way) server with 16gb ram in from
dell with Win2008 already installed with no roles on it. I am trying to
decide if I should do a re-install (it looks pretty lean) and also if I do
should I go with server core or full gui. My biggest concern with running
Windows 2008 gui is resource utillization and windows type freezes, hangs,
or other issues that we cause the system to need rebooting (additional
services that will require updating, etc). So maybe my questions boils down
to this (I am thinking through this as I type):
1. Is there considerable overhead with the gui (already asked this above
2. Is server core more stable than with the GUI installed?

Background: We had ESX (6 hosts) at my last place of employment and we
never had to reboot these hosts. I am hoping for a similar experience with
hyper-v.

thanks in advance,
Clay

No, there's no big resource hit, IME.
