| | Dynamic .vhd expansion. Hi, we're running a 2003 VM on a 2008 Hyper-V server with integration services installed. The VM has two dynamic .vhd's, one for the OS and one for data. The data .vhd recently expanded from 53GB to well over 100GB. When I look at the size of the data on the drive inside the VM it's only using 74GB, not 100GB+. Does anyone know exactly how a dynamic .vhd grows? Everything I've read says that a dynamic .vhd should consume just over the ammount of data on the drive. The overage is for header and footer information. In this case it appears that the .vhd has grown by some incremental amount rather than by the size of the data being consumed. Is there any specific documentation on dynamic .vhd growth? |

| | Re: Dynamic .vhd expansion. I'm guessing that some process created a really large temporary file or files and when it was done, the files were deleted. | | Re: Dynamic .vhd expansion. Agreed...or perhaps some sort of application with a memory leak, etc. Anything that could have been consuming hard drive space (swap file, etc.) could have caused this... Remember that you can always run a Compact operation on the VHD which will remove blank space from the VHD file.
