VHD compacting

Hi, it seems that the VHD files are somewhat inefficent and they grow quite
large if there is a lot of file movement inside the vm machine. So far it
seems that the vhd compact process is not very quick, is there a better way
to maintain these machines? I am not in a shop that requires 100% uptime,
but the hour or so to compact some of the larger VM's is not acceptable
downtime. Is there a better way to manage this, IE: a snapshot to compat
while the vm is live or some way to script this to run? Any help greatly
appreciated. Thanks
